Education Dept. Proposes Narrowing Parts of 'Gainful Employment' Regulation

September 27, 2011 ~ The Chronicle of Higher Education

Saying the intent of its new “gainful employment” regulation was to take aim at colleges’ “worst-performing programs,” the Department of Education today proposed an easing of the rule:

Colleges creating new programs would need only to obtain the department’s approval if the programs were similar to ones that fail the debt-to-income or loan-repayment tests of the regulation. In its notice of the proposed change, published today in the Federal Register, the department estimates that more than 4,500 new programs at for-profit and nonprofit colleges will be submitted for approval annually.
